Aon plc, the global professional services company, has announced the appointment of Masahito Hirai as chief executive officer of its Japan operations, with the role taking effect from 30 June 2026.

Hirai will oversee the company’s business strategy in Japan, with responsibility for growth initiatives and client service delivery across the market. He will report to Qin Lu, Head of North Asia, and become part of Aon’s North Asia leadership team.

Lu commented: “Max brings deep market insight, strong leadership capability and a clear focus on clients. His global business experience and collaborative leadership style position him well to build on our strong momentum in Japan and advance our Aon United strategy — helping clients and colleagues navigate an increasingly complex risk environment.”

Hirai brings more than three decades of experience in the insurance industry, having held senior leadership positions across several international markets.

He began his career at Tokio Marine in Japan before moving into executive roles spanning Asia, North America and South America. He currently leads Tokio Marine’s Asia regional business as chief executive officer, overseeing both life and non-life operations across Southeast Asia and India.

Hirai has extensive experience managing large-scale insurance operations through periods of business growth and organisational change. The company noted that he is recognised for his strategic leadership, operational discipline and ability to develop collaborative teams across multiple markets. Aon added that his understanding of Japan’s insurance landscape and client-led approach are expected to support the company’s ongoing development in the country.

“I’m honoured to take on this role at an exciting time for the Japan market, where there is significant opportunity ahead,” added Hirai. “I have long respected Aon’s strong position and contributions to clients in Japan and look forward to working closely with colleagues to further strengthen our business in the market.”

Aon also confirmed that outgoing Japan chief executive Tatsuya Yamamoto will remain involved in an advisory capacity during the leadership transition period.
