Canopius Group has appointed Paul Western as head of US casualty treaty, effective immediately.

canopius-logoWestern joins Canopius from Optio Group, where he held the position of chief underwriting officer, overseeing strategic developments across numerous classes of business.

Prior to that, Paul gained considerable experience in the US casualty market having spent 17 years at MS Amlin Syndicate, most recently as product lead for US casualty and specialty lines and previously head of casualty insurance.

He will report to Christopher Gray, head of specialty reinsurance, in his new role.

Gray said: “With an impressive reputation, market leading expertise and invaluable relationships, Paul is a fantastic addition to our business. He joins as Canopius looks to realise its growth ambitions following the recently announced restructure and I am delighted to welcome Paul to the team.”

The appointment of Western is among many that Canopius Group has made in recent weeks. After naming  Neil Robertson as group CEO and Trevor Moss as head of investor relations in January, Jennie Rimmer as head of tax in March, and Claire Wallace as head of marine treaty in April, the company said in May that CUO Mike Duffy was gearing up for retirement.
