The Ethical AI in Insurance Consortium (EAIC) has made significant strides in its mission to promote responsible and transparent AI adoption in the insurance sector with the addition of 10 new founding members.
This expansion of expertise promises to have a substantial impact on the industry.
Among the new members, Brian Casey, Partner and Co-Chair of Regulatory & Transactional Insurance Practice Group for Locke Lord, emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between AI technologists and regulatory compliance requirements.
Douglas Benalan, CIO of CURE Insurance, stressed the necessity of prioritising responsible AI adoption to enhance services while upholding ethical standards.
Sandeep Bajaj, Group Chief Information Officer of Players Health, highlighted the opportunity presented by ethical AI to design technology that empowers humanity and guides us toward a future where technology serves as a force for good.
Kim Holmbeck, Director of Program Management for Co-operative Insurance Companies, emphasised the need for awareness regarding potential biases as AI usage increases.
Elizabeth Foughty, a strategic consultant with extensive AI experience, expressed support for harnessing AI’s potential in the insurance industry while understanding the ethical implications.
Oded Barak, CEO of Five Sigma, echoed the importance of responsible AI adoption in creating a sustainable and equitable future for the insurance sector.
Cory Isaacson, CEO of reThought Flood, emphasized the importance of using AI ethically in line with transparency, technology, and trust, particularly in addressing critical issues like closing the flood protection gap.
The addition of these new members signifies a significant milestone in the EAIC’s mission to unite various stakeholders toward a common goal. This brings the total number of parties involved in the EAIC to 13, including initial founding members Cloverleaf Analytics, Socotra, and Exavalu.
As AI becomes increasingly integral to functions such as underwriting, claims processing, and pricing in the insurance industry, ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability is paramount.
The EAIC addresses critical challenges associated with AI use, including algorithmic bias and customer acceptance.
The core objectives of the EAIC encompass the development of ethical technology guidelines, advocacy for insurers and the insured, collaboration and knowledge-sharing, and promoting standardisation within the sector.
Founding members Socotra, Exavalu, and Cloverleaf Analytics expressed their enthusiasm for the Insurance AI research initiative and the expansion of the EAIC.

Michael Schwabrow, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Cloverleaf Analytics, welcomed the broader knowledge represented within the EAIC.
The EAIC is set to reveal its research findings and recommendations in Q1 2024, offering an opportunity for dialogue about the responsible integration of AI in insurance practices in a live webinar coinciding with the launch of the research report.
