GFIA elects Don Forgeron as president

The Global Federation of Insurance Associations (GFIA) has announced the election of Don Forgeron as its new president, as well as new appointments to its executive committee, following a vote at its annual general assembly.

GFIAForgeron, who is president and Chief Executive Officer of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, takes over from Recaredo Arias, who is director general of the Mexican Association of Insurance Companies.

Susan K. Neely, who is the president and CEO of the American Council of Life Insurers, will take over Forgeron’s previous role as vice-president.

In addition, there were new appointments to GFIA’s ExCo which included Bachir Baddou, the general manager of the Moroccan Federation of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies, who was appointed GFIA’s treasurer.

Toyonari Sasak¸ vice chairman of the Life Insurance Association of Japan, was appointed regional representative and Michaela Koller, director general of Insurance Europe, was reappointed as secretary general.

Forgeron commented: “I am deeply honoured to have been appointed as GFIA president. Given the challenges our industry faces, my priority will be to ensure that our voice continues to be heard clearly by global standard setters and international organisations, and that the significant contributions made by our industry to society and the economy are recognised.

“I also wish to thank Recaredo for his strong leadership and the contribution that he has made to our industry during his mandate as GFIA president.”
