Homes with a reconstruction value of $145 billion at risk of Dorian landfall: CoreLogic

30th August 2019 - Author: Luke Gallin

CoreLogic analysis shows that 668,052 single-family and multifamily homes along the east coast of Florida, with a combined reconstruction value (RCV) of $144.6 billion, are at potential risk of storm surge damage from Hurricane Dorian making landfall as a Category 3 storm.

Hurricane Dorian continues to track towards a Florida landfall, with significant time left to strengthen over open warm seas. Reports suggest that further intensification of Dorian is almost assured and the forecasts still present a roughly Category 4 major hurricane at landfall on Florida’s east coast on Monday.

Based on the NHC’s Thursday Aug 29th 5pm EDT forecast, which was a Cat 3 landfall, CoreLogic has highlighted the potential for substantial damage from storm surge along the east coast of Florida.

Dorian CoreLogic RCV

The above chart, provided by CoreLogic, shows that were the storm to make landfall as a Cat 4 storm, which the latest forecasts suggest is possible, then the potential number of homes at risk of storm surge increases substantially, as does the RCV.

The RCV figures assume a 100% destruction of all homes that are at risk, so the worst case scenario.

CoreLogic notes that as the storm approaches Florida, its path will become clearer and the areas at risk will narrow.

The latest forecasts show that the storm is due to make landfall on the east coast of Florida shortly after 8pm on Monday, further to the south than had originally anticipated.
