US primary insurer Cincinnati Financial Corporation has announced its financial results for the third-quarter 2026, reporting a net income of $459 million, down from the $1.1 billion seen in the same period last year.

cincinnati-logo-newAccording to Cincinnati, the $663 million decrease was primarily driven by lower net investment gains rather than a deterioration in core underwriting performance.

The downturn reflected after-tax net decreases of $657 million from net investment gains and $41 million from property-casualty underwriting profit, which were partially offset by a $24 million rise in net investment income.

Q3 2026 non-GAAP operating income stood at $443 million, compared with $449 million in the third quarter of last year. Over the first nine months of the year, non-GAAP operating income rose 38% to reach $997 million.

Net income for the first nine months of 2026 reached $2 billion, increasing 16% from the $1.7 billion reported for the same period the year prior.

In property and casualty operations, Q3 2026 saw a combined ratio of 90.9%, up from Q3 2025’s 88.2%, largely reflecting higher catastrophe losses, which grew by 7 points compared with last year’s third quarter, moving closer to historical averages for Q3.

Group-wide, earned premiums increased 5% to $2.7 billion from $2.6 billion in Q3 2025, while total revenues stood at $3.05 billion, compared to $3.7 billion a year earlier.

The group’s life insurance subsidiary generated $31 million in net income, an increase of $3 million year over year, alongside 2% growth in term life and earned premiums.

Stephen M. Spray, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented: “This quarter is a nice example of the impact our many growth, profitability and diversification initiatives are having on our insurance business. While catastrophe losses grew by 7.0 points compared with last year’s third quarter – moving closer to historical averages for the third quarter – our overall combined ratio of 90.9% reflects our continued efforts in pricing segmentation across our organization and the purposeful diversification of our growth.

“On a nine-month basis we achieved healthy non-GAAP operating income, increasing that measure 38% to $997 million. Our insurance operations continued to lead the way. With three-quarters of the year behind us, our 95.8% combined ratio is comfortably within our long-term target of 92% to 98%.”

The company also reported continued momentum across its excess and surplus lines and reinsurance platforms. Through September, nine-month net written premiums increased 7% at The Cincinnati Specialty Underwriters Insurance Company, 13% at Cincinnati Global Underwriting, and 11% at Cincinnati Re.

Spray also commented on how insurance profitability is fuelling investments, stating: “Consolidated cash and total investments topped $34 billion. Since December, book value per share has risen to $105.42, driven by the contribution of our insurance operations and the strength of our investment portfolio.

“This ample capital allows us to execute on our long-term strategies and, at the same time, continue to not just pay dividends to shareholders, but increase them, through the normal variability of investment and insurance markets as we’ve done for 66 years.”
