Markel appoints Chubb’s Robert Cox as President and COO, Insurance

Markel Corporation has appointed Robert Cox, former Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Chubb, to the newly created position of President and COO, Insurance Operations.

Markel LogoCox will be tasked with overseeing all of Markel’s insurance divisions, including Markel Assurance, Markel Specialty, and Markel International , as well as Sales and Marketing.

Additionally, Markel announced the promotions of Brad Kiscaden to President and Chief Administrative Office, and Bryan Sanders to President, U.S Insurance, effective September 5th, 2018.

Cox has more than 35 years of insurance leadership experience, having previously served as Executive Vice President (EVP) and COO for Chubb, where he led the worldwide operations of Chubb Specialty Insurance.

During his career, he has also held several other executive positions and has extensive experience in all areas of specialty and commercial property and casualty (P&C) insurance, in addition to having worked in multiple distribution channels worldwide.

Cox will report to Richie Whitt, Co-Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Markel Corporation, who commented: “The addition of Bob to our executive leadership team and the promotions of Brad and Bryan strengthen our focus on profitable growth and delivering the best value and services for our customers. These moves will accelerate our ability to deliver on these goals.”

Kiscaden has served Markel as EVP and Chief Actuarial Officer since 2012, and has held a number of other leadership positions since joining the company in 1986.

In his new role, Kiscaden will continue to report to Whitt and oversee global actuarial operations, catastrophe management, information technology, information management, underwriting product line leadership, and claims.

“Brad’s experience with Markel has given him a deep understanding of our operations across the globe, and he has played a critical role in a number of key initiatives to grow the business,” said Whitt. “Brad’s commitment, leadership, and extensive knowledge of our organization make him the ideal candidate for this important role.”

Sanders has served Markel as President of Markel Assurance since the division’s creation in 2017, before which he was President of Markel Wholesale.

He has more than 36 years of industry experience and joined Markel in 2013 as part of the Alterra acquisition, having previously held leadership positions with Alterra Specialty, Max Specialty, Hilb Rogal and Hobbs (HRH) Company, and MacDuff Underwriters, Inc.

In his new role, Sanders will report to Cox and oversee the Markel Assurance and Markel Specialty division.

Whitt continued: “Bryan has built relationships and a level of expertise that has proven invaluable for our production partners and customers. He has played an integral role in helping Markel maintain its leadership position and increase our market presence in both the wholesale and retail marketplace. I know that he will continue to move us forward in leading the Markel Assurance and Markel Specialty divisions.”
