24th February 2023 - Author: Jack Willard

Markel International, a subsidiary of Markel Corporation, has appointed Paul Hutchins as a senior underwriter for its warranty and indemnity (W&I) underwriting team, reporting to Bryan Dressler, Head of W&I at Markel International.

markelMarkel noted that Hutchins brings considerable experience in underwriting performance, workflow optimisation, and local law specialisms towards the role, which will allow for the W&I team to make more informed decisions with pace for SME transactions up to £/€300m, in the UK and European Economic Area (EEA).

The role will also see Hutchins help manage broker relationships, therefore ensuring that a high level of service and solution-oriented focus continues to be delivered to brokers and their clients, which includes corporate lawyers, private equity funds, and corporates engaging in M&A.

Prior to the appointment, Hutchins worked at ANV Global Services for more than eight years. He began his tenure at the firm as an M&A underwriter, before he was later promoted to senior M&A underwriter. During his tenure, Hutchins played a crucial role in establishing and growing the UK arm of the business, while at the same time, supporting junior members with their professional development.

Furthermore, some of Hutchins’ other achievements include developing a rating model for W&I alongside actuaries, and assisting with the development of an SME specific product, before rolling it out to the UK, as well as various European jurisdictions.

Addressing Hutchins’ appointment, Dressler said: “We are delighted to welcome Paul to the W&I team. His deep market insights earned over almost 10 years of W&I underwriting experience are hard to rival and will complement the specialist skillsets of the team. Paul is well-positioned to capitalise on all the resources Markel has to offer as one of the leading company markets dedicated to the W&I SME space in the UK and Europe.”

“Paul will not only help shape our tailored underwriting model, but also make sure it runs seamlessly, so we can continue delivering an exceptional service and maintain a holistic approach for insuring SME W&I risks in the UK and the EEA.”

Earlier this month, Markel International announced the appointment of Laura Devoir to the role of underwriter and senior credit analyst for its trade credit team.

Additionally, in late 2022, Markel International expanded its Hong Kong presence with the opening of a new office. The new office upgrade clearly signals the firms aim to develop and grow its specialist expertise within the region.
