Moonrock Insurance, a specialist insurer providing cover for emerging aviation risks including unmanned aviation, has appointed Rory Galloway as its first Chief Data and Actuarial Officer.

The newly established executive position reflects the company’s ongoing focus on strengthening its use of data, analytics and actuarial expertise as it continues to develop its underwriting capabilities.

According to Moonrock Insurance, the appointment forms part of its wider strategy to bring together specialist underwriting knowledge, actuarial analysis and advanced data capabilities to support future growth.

The company said that improving connections between underwriting, pricing, claims and portfolio performance through data-driven insights is becoming increasingly important as the insurance market continues to develop.

Galloway joins Moonrock Insurance from Markel International, where he held the role of Head of Reserving and Signing Actuary. A Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, he has more than two decades of experience working across the insurance and reinsurance sectors, with expertise spanning actuarial functions, risk analysis and portfolio management.

Galloway will oversee the company’s actuarial, pricing, portfolio analytics and data strategy activities. His experience will help enhance risk assessment, support more informed underwriting decisions and provide greater insight into trends emerging within the unmanned aviation and advanced air mobility markets.

Simon Ritterband, Managing Director of Moonrock Insurance, commented: “This appointment is about much more than adding another senior leader. It reflects where we believe the future of insurance is heading. Moonrock has always challenged conventional thinking within insurance. The creation of this role demonstrates our commitment to investing in the people, technology and analytical capability needed to build a business fit for the future.”

Moonrock Insurance stated that the appointment represents a further step in developing its analytical capabilities and supporting its ambition to create a more modern approach to specialist insurance. The company added that Galloway’s expertise will help it better understand changing risks, improve decision-making and continue building solutions for the evolving aviation sector.

Galloway said: “I’m delighted to be joining Moonrock at such an exciting stage of its growth. The company has built a strong reputation for specialist underwriting and innovation within the unmanned aviation sector. What particularly attracted me was Moonrock’s ambition to combine deep technical expertise with a modern, data-driven approach to insurance. The opportunity to help develop that capability and support the next phase of the company’s growth is incredibly exciting.”
