Canopius Group names Geoffrey Saville Head of Catastrophe Research

Specialty insurer and reinsurer, Canopius Group has appointed former WTW Head of Weather and Climate Risk Research, Geoffrey Saville, as Head of Catastrophe Research.

Based in London, Saville will report to Paul Wilkinson, Head of Risk Strategy & Analytics. He will help enhance Canopius Group’s science-led understanding and approach to climate related risk.

canopius-logoSaville took to LinkedIn to share the news of his new role, he said: “Happy to begin my new position this week as Head of Catastrophe Research in the catastrophe management team at Canopius Group!

“Great to meet my new colleagues and learn more about the role. There are lots of interesting projects underway and in the pipeline, so I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Prior to joining Canopius Group Saville spent almost ten years working at broking firm WTW.

During his tenure at the firm he held several senior positions including Head of Weather and Climate Risks Research, which he held for almost two years; Senior Research Manager, a position he held for four years; and spent close to four years as WRN Atmospheric Hub leader.

He played a key role in the development of the broker’s global research strategy and risk modelling tools, since joining in 2013.

Before WTW he worked for almost four years at the Met Office, where he started as a Specialist Forecaster in 2009, followed by being appointed Business Consultant and leaving the company after his role as Senior Operational Meteorologist.

Saville also spent close to three years as Meteorological Forecaster at BAS-Serco, Bermuda Weather Service.

He said: “Our industry is faced with ever-increasing exposure to the complex threats associated with natural catastrophes. Only through the application of data, technology and scientific research can we begin to truly understand and navigate the interconnected and multifaced risk landscape to deliver nuanced solutions. With its science-led ethos, Canopius is a leader in this critical field and I am very happy to have joined the catastrophe management team.”

Wilkinson commented: “Geoff’s appointment is an important development as we look to enhance our existing research and cat capabilities. It is through the expertise and broad experience of people such as Geoff that Canopius will achieve its growth ambitions by delivering essential data to empower underwriting and enhance the solutions we provide to our clients.”
