Flood Re, the UK’s government-backed reinsurance scheme, has launched a Flood Risk Charter alongside the National Flood Forum (NFF) at a Parliamentary event.

Flood Re LogoThe charter contains a list of recommendations designed to help communities feel safe in the face of the increasing threat of flooding.

It calls for more funding to improve flood defences, further work to ensure coordination between flooding community groups and government agencies, and for Government policy to help address the mental and physical wellbeing of those impacted by flooding.

“The Flood Risk Communities’ Charter is the culmination of the feedback and insight from the hundreds of people who participated in the ‘Let’s Talk About Flooding’ events,” said Andy Bord, Chief Executive of Flood Re.

“I am very pleased that so many people in high flood risk areas were able to talk to us at events across England, Scotland and Wales about the issues that really matter to them.

“The recent very wet weather is a reminder that Flood Re continues to ensure that affordable home insurance is available to that those families living in high flood risk areas.

“Householders should shop around to ensure they are getting the best home insurance deal for them and the right cover for their homes.”

Paul Cobbing, Chief Executive of National Flood Forum, added, “We travelled across Great Britain to speak to people exposed to flooding and have used this valuable insight to form our Charter.

“Climate change means that flooding is only going to get worse, and it is therefore vital that communities are ready and protected.

“This Charter is intended to raise awareness of the issues that those affected by flooding face and encourage further action to be taken to ensure their lives are not dominated by the fear of flooding.”
