Catastrophe loss data aggregator PERILS has settled on a figure of €782 million (US $889 million) as its fourth and final estimate for the insurance market loss resulting from Extratropical Cyclone Dragi-Eberhard in March 2019.

cyclone-dragi-eberhardDragi-Eberhard affected the British Isles, and Western and Central Europe on 9 and 10 March and was the largest windstorm of the 2018/2019 European extratropical cyclone season.

The latest estimate of losses from PERILS is slightly higher than its previous figure of €772 million, released in September 2019, but is still more conservative than its earlier assessments.

PERILS noted that the majority of the losses occurred in Belgium, France and Germany, while the UK, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland were affected to a much lesser degree.

The event consisted of two parts with Dragi arriving as the weaker low-pressure system on March 9, followed by Eberhard on March 10.

Dragi brought wind gusts of up to 100 km/h and mainly affected parts of Belgium, Northern Germany, Poland and northern parts of the Czech Republic, while Eberhard hit the British Isles before moving over an area that spanned France, the Benelux countries, Germany and Eastern Europe.
