MS Amlin appoints Malcolm Barnes as head of marine reinsurance

MS Amlin has appointed Malcolm Barnes as head of marine reinsurance. Barnes will take up his role in September this year.

ms-amlin-logoBarnes joins MS AUL from Canopius, where he was head of marine treaty. Prior to this, he was divisional director for reinsurance at Amtrust with responsibility for all inwards reinsurance business.

Barnes also spent several years as vice president at XL Re, as well as Guy Carpenter where he held a variety of business development and broking responsibilities.

Andrew Carrier, chief underwriting officer of MS Amlin Underwriting Ltd, commented: “I am very pleased we have secured someone with Malcolm’s reinsurance pedigree and market experience. MS AUL has been involved in Marine Reinsurance for many years. It is an important market for us, and Malcolm’s appointment underlines both its significance and our ongoing commitment.”

Carrier joined the firm himself less than two years ago when he moved over from Everest Re.

He added: “With the recent announcement of Grant Baxter as head of reinsurance and deputy CUO, we continue to strengthen our reinsurance team around a central vision of profitable growth, developing mutually beneficial relationships with our key distribution partners.”

Baxter was announced as joining the firm at the beginning of the month. He will take up his role towards the end of the year, will be based in London, and will report to Carrier.

There has been a host of new hires within MS Amlin in recent months. In June, the form announced that it was adding Katie Wolff to its team as its new UK country manager. And in May, the firm also appointed Julie Ferguson and Rob Margetts to new roles, Ferguson as head of open market property and Margetts to an undisclosed role within the strategy and transformation team.
